Hyderabad: Surgeons at AIG Hospitals have successfully conducted a complex skull-to-spine tumor surgery using a unique combination of Augmented Reality/Mixed Reality (AR/MR) headsets and a robotic exoscope. Led by Dr Abhirama Chandra Gabbita, the milestone procedure marks a first for the Telugu-speaking states.
By utilising AR/MR glasses, the surgical team benefited from an environment where digital anatomical maps and the physical workspace co-existed in real time. Instead of looking away from the patient to check traditional monitors, the surgeons had 3D imaging projected directly into their line of sight.
The surgeons also deployed a robotic exoscope that acted as their advanced eye, delivering magnified, crystal-clear video of deep neural pathways within a high-risk operating corridor.
Dr Subodh Raju, Director of Neurosurgery, and Dr Abhirama point out that such surgeries represent the future direction of the operation theatres. The surgeons said that instead of relying on guesswork or bulky screens, the technology lets doctors see right through the tissue like wearing sci-fi glasses, while the robotic camera gives them a microscopic view of hard-to-reach spots. It doesn’t replace the doctor’s steady hand; it just gives them more clarity, the surgeons added.
