HYDERABAD: The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is gearing up for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, which are scheduled to be held early next year, with party chief Asaduddin Owaisi set to launch the party’s poll outreach campaign from Bahraich on Sunday.

The public meeting in the Matera Assembly constituency of Bahraich district, located in the Devipatan division of Uttar Pradesh, will mark AIMIM’s formal entry into the State’s election campaign ahead of the 2027 polls.

Asaduddin Owaisi said the party would contest the elections to be held in Uttar Pradesh next year. “We are going for a public meeting; definitely, we will contest the elections. It is too early to say the exact number of seats we will contest or whether we will enter into an alliance with any party,” he told media persons on Saturday.

While the AIMIM president did not reveal the number of seats the party would contest, AIMIM’s Uttar Pradesh president, Shaukat Ali, recently told reporters that the party is planning to contest around 200 Assembly seats.

This is the third time that AIMIM is joining the fray in Uttar Pradesh, where the Samajwadi Party has a strong presence. Minority voters have preferred the Samajwadi Party for decades.

AIMIM contested elections in Uttar Pradesh for the first time in 2017, when it fielded candidates in 38 of the State’s 403 Assembly constituencies and polled around 2 lakh votes, accounting for about 0.2 per cent of the vote share.

In 2022, the party fielded candidates in 97 seats but failed to win even one. However, its vote share increased to 0.46 per cent, partly due to the higher number of seats it contested.
