HYDERABAD: The initiatives of the former BRS government for the welfare and development of minorities came in for praise from the most unexpected quarter at the Telangana Legislative Assembly on Monday, when the Majlis floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi minced no words in criticising the ruling Congress and praising the BRS.

Participating in the discussion on budgetry demands, the MIM legislator recalled how 27 lakh Muslim students were benefitted through government scholarships alone. “It is a wonderful work done by the BRS government then. Former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao is a kind-hearted leader and did lot of welfare work for Muslims in the last 10 years,” he maintained.

He noted that during Ramzan festival, the BRS government had offered clothes and gifts to the poor and needy under “Ramzan Thofa”. But now under the Congress government, except the Chief Minister’s Iftar party, nothing is being offered to the Muslims, he rued.

The Majlis floor leader brought to the attention of the House on what he termed as “irregularities in identification of beneficiaries for overseas scholarships and other schemes for SC, ST, BC and EBCs”. He charged that high income groups were enjoying the benefits at the expense of the poor. The benefits of Rajiv Yuva Vikasam scheme, SC, STs and minorities were not getting benefits, as the beneficiaries were to be selected by June, but how could those who do not have a ration card apply, he asked.

Akbaruddin Owaisi did not mince words in calling out the failures of the Congress government. The ruling party had promised Rs 4,000 pensions, 10 grams gold under Kalyana Lakshmi programme, and Minority Declaration etc. “I will be speaking about the six guarantees, till the time the government fulfilled all its promises. We will be after the government till the 420 promises is implemented,” he asserted.

Real estate debacle

The AIMIM MLA told the House that the real estate sector in the State had collapsed in Hyderabad thanks to the demolitions by undertaken by HYDRAA and removal of structures on River Musi banks under Musi project. The government has to taje measures to revive the real estate sector.

In the past, the summer contingency plan was discussed in MLAs’ meeting, but this year no such contingency plan was implemented and people in GHMC areas were facing water shortage and farmers were struggling for irrigation water in the districts.

Faced with the sharp criticism, the Legislativ Affairs minister D Sridhar Babu attempt to rebut the charges and referring to the AIMIM MLA’s apprehensions over sale of 400 acres land at Kancha Gachibowli, he assured that the government would not touch the lands owned by the University of Hyderabad. “We will not touch the two lakes and rock formations” D Sridhar Babu assured adding that vested interests from New Delhi were misleading and conducting a campaign over the issue.

On the real estate collapse due to HYDRAA and Musi demolitions, the Minister defended saying not just in Hyderabad, the real estate sector was dull in Karnataka, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi.

There was no relation between HYDRAA and real sector slump in Hyderabad. Infact, people were welcoming HYDRAA and lodging complaints over encroachments. Of the 9,078 complaints, 7,249 have been attended and disposed, he added.
