Hyderabad: AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi on Saturday staged a walkout from the Telangana Legislative Assembly, in protest against the Congress government suppressing opposition voices and mishandling the House proceedings. He said the government completely failed in handling the Assembly.

Speaking during Zero Hour on Monday, Owaisi lashed out at the ruling party, alleging that AIMIM legislators were denied the opportunity to speak. He said the Assembly was being held as per the convenience of the Congress, with no regard for the Opposition members trying to raise public concerns. “When we want to speak, the mike is denied to us. This is not how a democracy functions,” he said.

He criticised the government for curtailing the Question Hour, altering questions, and avoiding direct answers. “I had sought details of GOs (government orders) and BROs (budget release orders) issued since December 7, 2023. But the date was removed. This government is failing to conduct the House properly,” he charged, citing his question which was deemed answered without allowing him to seek clarifications.

Owaisi also objected to the premature closure of the Question Hour and called on the Speaker to ensure transparency. “This is an Assembly, not Gandhi Bhavan. It should not be run at the ruling party’s whims,” he said before leading his party’s walkout in protest.

The Speaker assured that the issues raised would be examined, but AIMIM members remained unconvinced, citing repeated suppression of their voices in the House.
