Peddapalli: In a shocking incident, the crew of 108 service ambulance stole gold ornaments from a jeweller from Andhra Pradesh who died in an accident on Tuesday. The crew, who were shifting Rambabu, one of three gold traders from the neighbouring State, and seriously injured, to a hospital, found two packets of gold on his person weighing two kg and 30 tolas and decided to steal it.

The episode began on Tuesday, when three jewellers – Kotha Srinivas, Kotha Rambabu and Gunda Santhosh from Narsaraopet in Guntur district – came to the district to supply gold ornaments totally weighing 5 kg and 60 tolas to various jewellery shops in various places. Their car, however, met with an accident at the railway over-bridge near Malyalapalli of Ramagundam mandal early on Tuesday morning. Srinivas died on the spot while Rambabu and Santosh were seriously injured. The two injured were shifted to hospital in two ambulances.

Chand, the emergency technician and Rajender, driver of the ambulance shifting Santhosh to a hospital, found one kg gold on his person, and immediately handed over the gold to Ramagundam SI Shailaja.

Meanwhile, Rambabu was being shifted to Godavarikhani hospital in another ambulance from Kamanpur. While giving first aid to Rambabu, EMT Tajuddin found two packets of gold ornaments on his person and informed G Laxma Reddy, the driver. The two came to an understanding to share the gold equally even as Ramababu breathed his last. The two then handed over the body to hospital staff and left.

Commissioner of Police V Satyanarayana produced Tajuddin and Laxma Reddy before the media in Godavarikhani on Wednesday, and narrated the sequence of events. The remaining two kg of gold ornaments was recovered from the accident spot.

After the accident, family members of the victims lodged a complaint with the police about the missing gold ornaments leading to the arrest of the two. Police recovered two kg and 30 tolas of gold ornaments from them.
