Hyderabad: A day after a major fire engulfed a commercial building located in the Maitrivanam area of Ameerpet, officials began assessing the damage while affected traders counted their heavy losses.

The blaze, which broke out on Thursday, destroyed stock and property in several shops, with preliminary estimates placing the losses at several crores of rupees.

Firefighters worked for more than three hours to bring the flames under control and prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining establishments.

No casualties were reported as occupants and customers were evacuated safely.

Meanwhile, fire department officials and local police have started an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.

While preliminary suspicions point to an electrical short circuit, officials said the cause would be confirmed only after a detailed inquiry.
