Hyderabad: Mild tension prevailed at Chinarayuni Cheruvu in Alwal in Medchal-Malkajgiri district on Thursday in the early hours after revenue officials of Medchal-Malkajgiri district demolished one unauthorised building on the ‘full tank level’ limits of the century-old Chinarayuni Cheruvu in Alwal.

The Alwal mandal revenue officer, S Ramulu, told Telangana Today, “Our revenue officials noticed during the routine inspection that one house was being built unauthorisedly on the ‘full tank level’ (FTL) area of Chinarayuni Cheruvu. The encroacher, violating the norms of the water bodies, built the structure. On Thursday in the wee hours, we demolished the entire structure and retained the cheruvu land.”

The water body has already been encroached upon, and thus it has shrunk by nearly one acre, with 80 houses built by encroaching on the cheruvu’s FTL limits. Currently, the issue is under sub judice. As per the revenue records, the extent of the cheruvu is 42 acres, said the revenue official.

Soon after the demolition began at the site, locals arrived and held a protest, attempting to stop the demolition. However, the police foiled their efforts and completed the demolition process.

Chinarayuni Cheruvu has turned into a cesspool due to connecting sewerage lines. Around half a dozen colonies abutting the cheruvu experience a flood threat due to overflowing during every rainy season. The main allegation of the locals is that the cheruvu is being encroached upon and structures are being built.
