Mantralayam: Five people have drowned while attempting to rescue a minor girl who slipped into the Tungabhadra river here in Kurnool district, said a police official.
The girl was washing her feet in the river around 4.30 pm on Saturday when she accidentally slipped and was swept away by the current, the official added.
“Five people who jumped into the river in an attempt to save the girl drowned, though the girl was saved,” the official said.
Police said the deceased belonged to neighbouring villages.
The official noted that local police launched a search operation to retrieve the bodies of the deceased with the assistance of State Disaster Management Force (SDRF) teams.
