Hyderabad: Infrastructure is the backbone for a city’s growth, and for the last few years, the growth of the same in Hyderabad has been on an unprecedented scale. This week, one more crucial addition to the city’s road infrastructure will become operational.

Travelling to the KBR Park Junction from Nagarjuna Circle, Punjagutta via Banjara Hills Road Number 3 will be a different experience with the new Punjagutta Access Road Steel Bridge and the widened road to be thrown open to traffic. Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister KT Rama Rao is likely to participate in the inaugural function and the facility will be inaugurated by Home Minister Mohammad Mahmood Ali.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has developed these facilities at an estimated cost of Rs 17 crore. While the steel bridge lands near the graveyard from Nagarjuna Circle, the road widened near the graveyard with the help of a steel structure that will ease traffic congestion on the Nagarjuna Circle – KBR Park Junction stretch. An exit road from the graveyard has also been developed as a part of the project. The total length of the Punjagutta Access Road Steel Bridge is 140 metres which include the 83-metre steel bridge portion and 57 metre-approaches. The total length of the road widened is 130 m and the steel portion is 58.55 metres.

According to GHMC officials, these facilities avoid congestion at the existing gate of the graveyard and ensure substantial savings in terms of travel time and vehicle operating cost. This is the second steel bridge at Punjagutta, the first being the one built to ease the traffic coming from Banjara Hills Road No 3 and heading towards Punjagutta.

Priority for sentiments
The Punjagutta Access Road Steel Bridge and the road that was widened near the Punjagutta Graveyard were built without disturbing the graves under the structures, therefore preserving the sentiments of people. The construction method adopted and the bridge design allows people to perform rituals near the graves located underneath the structures. The first Punjagutta steel bridge which is already in use was also built in a similar manner. The steel structure had to be used to build both the bridges in Punjagutta and widen the road near the Punjagutta Graveyard as laying foundation pillars would damage the graves and block the access for people who want to perform rituals near the graves.
