Visakhapatnam: As many as 50 members including the Mayor Hari Venkata Kumari, will be the cynosure of all eyes at the first meeting of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation to be held after a lapse of over a decade on Friday.
In the elections held to GVMC after 2007, women won in 48 of the total number of 98 wards. Their number swelled to 50 with two more who were co-opted as members.
The Telugu Desam Party, which sprang a surprise winning 30 wards, is expected to play the role of a strong opposition with many seniors in the ranks. However, it seems to have run into some rough weather by choosing a first-timer Peela Srinivasa Rao as the Floor Leader without consulting the elected corporators. Senior corportors Kaki Govinda Reddy, Lella Koteswara Rao, Palla Srinivasa Rao, Gandham Seenu and Senapati Vasantha have openly criticised the party leadership for not taking majority opinion in the matter.
