Amaravati: State Election Commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar received a rude shock on Monday with the Andhra Pradesh High Court cancelling the election schedule issued by him for conducting panchayat polls in the state. The High Court which heard the house motion petition of the Andhra Pradesh government challenging the SEC decision, observed that the SEC announcement of the election schedule was arbitrary and noted that the schedule would hamper the vaccination programme in the state which was more important.
Noting that the poll schedule was being cancelled in view of public health, the verdict said that the Right to Life under Articles 14 and 21 had to be protected and people should not be deprived of the right. While concurring with the government’s argument that the people should not be deprived of their rights, the High Court noted that the SEC did not heed the suggestions of the government in the matter.
