Cup defeating Levon Aronian of the US on Saturday.
Goa: Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi stormed into the quarterfinals of the FIDE World Cup, defeating two-time winner Levon Aronian of the United States in the second game of the round of 16 here on Saturday.
Arjun was in control throughout, and the fact that his victory came with the black pieces speaks volumes about the resilience of the Indian, who adapted to different situations with remarkable composure.
Having drawn the first game under classical time control against an opponent in peak form, Arjun was at his best in the return game, steering the position to his liking. The Italian Opening, under scrutiny at the World Cup, again featured prominently. The middlegame saw a routine pawn structure, but Arjun broke through in the centre, creating an uneven pawn formation with his knights threatening kingside damage.
Aronian, usually composed and recently in fine form, faltered for the first time in the event, struggling to defend a difficult position. His 28th move reflected the pressure, and Arjun’s subsequent knight sacrifice sealed the contest, leaving the Indian just three match wins away from annexing the World Cup.
Elsewhere, Grandmaster P Harikrishna drew his second game with Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara of Mexico and will face a tiebreaker on Sunday. Nodirbek Yakubboev of Uzbekistan secured his place in the last eight by defeating Gabriel Sargissian of Armenia.
In other matches, Sam Shankland of the United States drew with Daniil Dubov of Russia to force a tiebreaker, while the all-Russian duel between Andrey Esipenko and Aleksey Grebnev will also be decided in the shorter format on Sunday.
