Assam flood situation improves, over 77,000 people remain affected

Assam's flood situation improved on Thursday, with over 77,500 people affected across four districts, down from nearly 87,000 a day earlier. Golaghat remained the worst-hit district. No fresh deaths were reported, while hundreds of villages and thousands of hectares remained flooded

Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam improved on Thursday as the number of affected people dipped to over 77,000 people in four districts, an official bulletin said. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 77,500 people remained affected in Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts.

Golaghat was the worst-hit district with nearly 35,000 people affected, followed by Nagaon (20,000) and Sivasagar (13,000). The flood situation has improved since Wednesday, when almost 87,000 people were affected across four districts.

With no new fatality reported, the total number of deaths in this year’s floods stands at 103. The ASDMA said that the administration has been operating 70 relief camps and relief distribution centres in four districts, taking care of 7,358 affected people at present. The authority has distributed 17.35 quintals of rice, 3.11 quintals of dal, 0.93 quintals of salt and 68.76 litres of mustard oil among the flood victims of the state during the last 24 hours.

A total of 370 villages were under water and 9,908.85 hectares of crop areas were damaged across Assam, the ASDMA said. Embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged by flood waters in different districts of the state. Dhansiri River was flowing above the danger level at Numaligarh. On account of widespread flooding, 45,540 domestic animals and poultry are affected across the state.
