Hyderabad: Leveraging the vibrant scientific and industrial ecosystem in Hyderabad, the State government is all set to take another major step to turn the city into a hub for biopharmaceutical research and manufacturing in the country. The State government is now developing B-Hub, a first-of-its-kind growth-phase center and biopharmaceutical scale-up manufacturing facility combined with next generation laboratory space in Genome Valley.
IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao on Sunday unveiled glimpses of the proposed B-Hub on Twitter, stating that the facility will be operational in 15 months and will help consolidate Telangana’s leadership position in biopharma space. With a built-up area of 1 lakh sq ft, the construction of B-Hub in two phases will compliment the extraordinary ecosystem of Genome Valley. It is being developed by the State government’s Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Limited and Telangana State Life Sciences in a unique partnership with the Department of Bio-technology of the Central government as well as life sciences company Cytiva and private equity firm Cerestra.
“The project is envisioned to be an accelerator for biopharma innovation featuring next generation laboratory suites, encouraging both Startups and mid-sized companies to interact and collaborate through collective spaces and lead innovation,” the Minister tweeted.
A biopharma scale-up manufacturing facility with a turnkey laboratory space is a key requirement to facilitate the growth of biosimilars in the life sciences industry. Biopharmaceutical companies are aspiring to advance a molecule from the laboratory to the clinic as quickly as possible without sacrificing product quality, process efficiency, or patient safety. To achieve this goal, companies must navigate the complexities associated with business planning, cell line development, process development, technology, and regulatory and risk assessment.
Observing that there is no such full-fledged infrastructure anywhere in the country as on date, the State government has mooted establishment of B-Hub which will be an end-to-end biopharma upscale facility. The facility addresses various challenges faced by the biopharma companies and offers substantial benefits to overall eco-system. It will also provide a platform for the Startups, mid-sized and even large biopharma companies to carry out their pre-clinical validation in the proposed facility, before making significant capex investment in the product.
Hyderabad has already emerged as leader in pharmaceutical and biotechnology as well as a major scientific and R&D hub (research and development). The city is well positioned to host such a facility.
