Karimnagar: Basic amenities are more important to improve standards in government schools. Delhi kind of results will be repeated in Telangana if the Mana Vooru Mana Badi programme is strictly implemented without giving any scope for irregularities.
Appreciating the government’s decision to develop all government schools in the State under the Mana Vooru Mana Badi programme, a retired headmaster and Telangana Rashtra Teacher’s Federation State honorary president Maneti Pratap Reddy shared his opinion with Telangana Today, the steps to be taken to improve standards of government schools.
Q: What kind of steps needs to be taken to improve standards in government schools?
A: Basic and physical facilities are more important to strengthen government schools as well as the school education system. It is necessary to take steps to supply drinking water, construct toilets, compound walls, and additional classrooms.
Since computer education has become a part of human life, the State government should focus on computer education and establish computer labs in all schools by providing all infrastructures. It is also necessary to focus on the digital education system.
Instead of merely constructing toilets, running supply is more important to maintain toilets clean. Earlier, scavengers used to clear toilets regularly. However, scavengers were removed from duties due to the Covid pandemic and the responsibility was given to gram panchayats. Sanitation workers of gram panchayats are not cleaning toilets regularly. So, the government should engage scavengers immediately.
Q. Is the existing teaching staff enough to meet the demand?
A. The State government’s new education policy is almost equivalent to National Education Policy 2020. Unlike Andhra Pradesh, Telangana decided to introduce an English media education system while continuing the Telugu medium. It is the right decision.
If the government wants the programme to be successful, it should give training to teachers to teach lessons in the English medium. Otherwise, the English medium concept will not be successful.
On the other hand, the strength of students in government schools has increased abnormally due to the Covid pandemic. However, there was no change in the strength of the teaching staff. So, the government should fill all vacant teacher posts with vidya volunteers immediately.
It is also more important to fill vacant headmaster, MEO, Deputy DEO and DEO posts. Out of 640 high schools in the Karimnagar district, 245 headmaster posts are vacant. Except for one, all Mandal Education Officers and a total of seven Deputy Education Officer posts are vacant.
Erstwhile Karimnagar district has been divided into four districts such as Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jagtial and Rajanna-Sircilla. However, except for Karimnagar, no other district has a regular District Education Officer. So, it is necessary to fill all vacant posts to strengthen the school education system.
