Bastar’s tribal runners set to make their mark at Hyderabad Marathon

About 184 young tribal runners from remote areas of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region will compete in the 15th NMDC Hyderabad Marathon on August 30. Supported by NMDC with training, equipment and logistics, the runners hope to showcase their athletic potential.

Hyderabad: From the rugged hill trails in Bastar to the streets of Hyderabad, about 184 young tribal runners are set to take part in the 15th NMDC Hyderabad Marathon to be held on August 30.

The runners have been selected from remote areas including Bailadila, Sukma, Dantewada, Bijapur, Bastar and Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh.

For many, the event will be their first experience of competing in a major city marathon. Several runners began training barefoot on village roads and the challenging terrain around Kirandul and Bacheli.

NMDC has supported the contingent by providing running shoes, kits, training, accommodation and transportation. Training for different batches began on August 17.

The group includes six women runners, while most participants will compete in the 10-km category. A few experienced runners will take part in the 21.1-km half marathon and 42.2-km full marathon. Some of the runners have shown the potential to pursue athletics professionally if provided sustained coaching and exposure.

With around 32,000 participants expected, the Hyderabad Marathon is expected to offer the Bastar youngsters a major platform to showcase their talent.
