Hyderabad: The Forest department has decided to start the process of collecting beedi leaves from the forests from November, said Principal Chief Conservator of Forests R Shobha on Wednesday.

The decision to start the process was taken to protect the forests from fire accidents, she said adding that around 242 units would be established this time and the units would be allocated through an online draw of lots.

The contractors, who collect leaves from the forests, should appoint fire watchers, she said at a meeting convened with the members of the Beedi Leaves Association.
