Khammam: The Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Bhadrachalam, has planned to set up mini libraries in post matric college hostels in erstwhile Khammam district for the benefit of students staying in the hostels.

There are 11 hostels in Khammam district and 23 hostels in Kothagudem district. ITDA spends more than Rs.5 crore for the maintenance of these hostels annually. Students studying degree, ITI, polytechnic, PG, pharmacy, GNM, B Sc (Nursing) and engineering courses stay in the hostels. Apart from their regular education the students in the hostels also prepare for competitive and job tests. They had to spend huge amounts of money in acquiring required books for preparing for the tests. As majority of the students are from poor backgrounds they find it difficult to buy books. ITDA project officer B Rahul said that the decision to set up mini libraries has been taken to ease the financial burden on the students. Availability of competitive books would help students to prepare well and excel in competitive and job tests.

In all 5,070 students are staying in the post matric hostels. Of them of 1965 are intermediate students, 2,137 degree students, 116 ITI students and 212 polytechnic students staying in the hostels, besides 181 engineering students, 59 PG students, 182 pharmacy students, 87 BSc (Nursing) students and 131 other students.Rahul informed that there are plans to conduct training programmes for competitive examinations by ITDA. Due to lack of proper preparation and training students are being rejected when job fairs are held.

The decision to set up libraries in post matric hostels would be a boon for the students. However, care should be taken to maintain and add latest books to the libraries regularly, said SFI Kothagudem district secretary B Veerabhadram.
