Kothagudem: The 160th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was celebrated here on Wednesday.

Marking Visvesvaraya’s birth anniversary, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) officials paid floral tributes to him and garlanded his bronze statue at the head office area.

Director (Operations) S Chandrashekhar speaking on the occasion said Visvesvaraya was a civil engineer who made all Indians proud with his many engineering marvels. With his discipline, commitment and creative mind he created a history in the field of engineering.

Though his services have largely been extended to the erstwhile state of Mysore, the civil engineer had also made contributions in the execution of several engineering projects in Telugu states and designed a drainage system in Hyderabad was instrumental in developing a system to protect Visakhapatnam port from sea erosion, the SCCL official said.

Visvesvaraya patented and installed an irrigation system with water floodgates at the Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune to raise the food supply level and storage to the highest levels known as block system in 1903, the Director informed.

Chandrashekhar called upon the present generation of engineers and engineering graduates to draw inspiration from Visvesvaraya and suggested that while performing the duty with commitment, new innovations should be made available to society.

The event was presided over by AGM (Civil) S Prasada Rao and was attended by DGM (Civil) P Rajasekhar. General Managers Guravaiah, K. Basavaiah, A Ananda Rao, Janaki Ram, K Nageswara Rao, PV Satyanarayana and others.
