Jayashankar Bhupalpally: A group of Maoists have escaped the police dragnet after a brief gun battle in Pedhampet forest area of Mahadevpur mandal in the district on Tuesday. The police have seized a .303 rifle, a few live rounds, eight kit bags, a water can, medical kit, solar light, utensils and other articles from the scene. In a press note issued here, the Mulugu SP Sangram Singh G Patil who is also the incharge SP of Bhupalpally district, stated that the police were combing the forests after they got specific information about the movement of the outlawed CPI (Maoists) in the Pedhampet forest area.
“While the police party was combing in forest area, the Maoists have fired at the police party. In retaliation, the police team returned fire. No causalities were reported on either side,” he added. He said that the Maoists had come to extort money from the businessmen and contractors. “Twenty police teams are searching for the escaped Maoists. Godavari river belt area and all ferry points are under control of police parties,” he said and asked the Maoists to surrender to the police without causing any violence.
