The bird which was rescued by the members of AWCS, at Ameenpur lake in Sangareddy district on Sunday.

Sangareddy: Members of Animal Warriors Conservation Society (AWCS) rescued an Oriental Darter (Anhinga melanogaster) which got entangled in discarded threads and released it into the Ameenpur lake safely in Sangareddy district.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) has listed the beautiful bird under the near-threatened category.

Since the Ameenpur Peddacheruvu, which was declared as Biodiversity Heritage Site by the government, is home to a variety of birds, wildlife photographers make regular visits to the water body to capture the movement of birds.

Murthy, a seasoned photographer, captured the bird struggling on July 16 in Ameenpur. He posted the photograph on Hyderabad Birding Pals Facebook Page, seeking their help to save the bird. AWCS, which has been continuously working for wildlife conservation in Telangana and other parts of the country, carried out a search operation in and around the Ameenpur lake. Finally, they rescued the bird on Sunday evening. After removing the net, they released the Darter into the water body since it was healthy.

Speaking on the occasion, Pradeep Nair, founder of AWCS, has called upon the people not to dump any waste in the water bodies because it will impact all the birds, reptiles, fishes and others living in the water.

He also urged the people to call them if they need any help to rescue animals, reptiles and birds in Telangana.
