Hyderabad: The torrential rains, which lashed Nizamabad district due to the impact of cyclone ‘Gulab’ for the last five days, damaged the inter-State bridge connecting Telangana and Maharashtra at Kandakurthi in the district.

The bridge was submerged due to the overflowing water of Godavari River. After water levels at the bridge receded after five days, the damaged road surfaced with loose gravel on it on Saturday morning. Believing that it would be difficult for the motorists to travel on the damaged bridge, officials of the Roads and Buildings department stopped vehicular movement on it.

The officials informed their counterparts in Maharashtra about the closure of the bridge. Once water levels recede completely, officials are contemplating to take up repair works before allowing the traffic movement on the bridge.

The district has registered more than 20 cm of rainfall since Saturday night due to the cyclone impact. More than 2,000 water bodies were filled with surplus water during this monsoon. The gates of Nizam Sagar Dam and Koulas Nala were also opened to discharge water downstream.

These two reservoirs received huge inflows due to heavy rains in the upstream catchment areas.
