Siddipet: A BRS contestant in Cheriyal municipality alleged that Congress leaders, fearing that their candidate would lose to her in the municipal polls, forced senior officials to suspend her husband, a police constable.

The BRS had fielded Kamalapuram Gitanjali, a mother of three daughters, from Ward No. 2, which is reserved for Scheduled Castes. Her husband, Ramesh, is posted as a constable at Komuravelly police station. Gitanjali alleged that following a complaint lodged by Congress leaders, Commissioner of Police S Rashmi Perumal suspended Ramesh on charges of campaigning in support of his wife.

She further alleged that her opponent and Congress candidate Mustyala Teja pressured her to withdraw from the election fray, fearing defeat. Though she was allegedly lured with money, Gitanjali said she refused to give in. Nursing a grudge against her, Congress leaders allegedly forced the Commissioner to suspend her husband late on Saturday night, she said.

Protesting the decision, Gitanjali, Ramesh and their family members staged a sit-in protest at the Dr BR Ambedkar statue on Sunday. Later, she submitted a representation at the statue.

Speaking on the occasion, Gitanjali challenged Congress leaders to face her directly in the election instead of resorting to indirect attacks. She demanded that the Commissioner revoke the suspension order and reinstate Ramesh into service.
