Hyderabad: BRS leader RS Praveen Kumar lashed out at Minister Ponnam Prabhakar for his remarks dismissing BRS candidate Maganti Sunitha‘s emotional response during the Jubilee Hills by-election campaign as drama. He said it was shameful that the Congress had a Minister who would trivialise a widow’s grief.
“When Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and YS Rajasekhara Reddy passed away, many shed tears. Were those tears also dramas?” he asked.
Speaking at Telangana Bhavan, Praveen Kumar questioned whether the Telangana State Women’s Commission, headed by Nerella Sarada, would issue notices to Ponnam Prabhakar over his comments.
“When BRS working president KT Rama Rao was accused of making a remark on women travelling in buses under free bus rides scheme, the Women’s Commission summoned him, even though he did not make any such comments. Will they now dare to act against the Minister or this is only selective?” he asked.
The BRS leader also condemned the filing of a police case against Maganti Sunitha and her daughter Akshara, calling it politically motivated. He said Sunitha was merely distributing Congress Dues Cards outside a mosque and not inside it. He said officials were being pressured to register cases against BRS leaders to intimidate them ahead of the bypoll.
Separately, BRS women leaders, including former Zilla Parishad chairperson Dava Vasantha, BRS corporators Sunitha, Samala Hema, and others also condemned the insensitive remarks of Ponnam Prabhakar and his colleague Thummala Nageswara Rao towards Maganti Sunitha. They said the Congress leaders were targeting her as they had failed to deliver on their promises. They recalled that the Congress leaders mounted a similar attack on former Minister and senior MLA P Sabitha Indra Reddy in the Assembly, after they failed to counter her arguments.
