Hyderabad: Senior BRS leaders on Friday accused the Congress government of using the Special Investigation Team (SIT) as a political tool to harass the opposition and divert attention from governance failures ahead of municipal elections.

Addressing the media at Telangana Bhavan, BRSLP deputy leader P Sabitha Indra Reddy questioned the government’s stand on the phone-tapping probe. She reminded that some Ministers in the Congress government claimed the SIT on the phone-tapping case was formed by the police without the Chief Minister’s knowledge.

“If that is true, how would Ministers in the previous BRS government know about any phone tapping and how can they be linked to it? The SIT is being used like a pawn to target BRS leaders ahead of the municipal elections,” she said, alleging harassment following the BRS victory in the Panchayat elections.

The BRSLP deputy leader said if summons to Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case amounted to harassment as claimed by their party leaders, notices to BRS working president KT Rama Rao were no different.

Former Minister V Sunitha Laxma Reddy said SIT notices were issued to Rama Rao and T Harish Rao within 24 hours after BRS exposed the Singareni coal tenders scam. She questioned why no SIT was formed on allegations against the Ministers and Congress leaders in irregularities in coal tenders, paddy procurement and land encroachments among others.

MLC Surabhi Vani Devi and former MLA Gongadi Sunitha accused the government of vendetta politics under the guise of investigations and ignoring pressing issues in agriculture, education and governance. They said after coming to power, the BRS will investigate into the irregularities during the Congress regime.
