Karimnagar: BRS leaders and local people, who participated in large numbers in the Deeksha Diwas programme held at Alugunur here on Friday, recollected the scenes that happened during the time of the arrest of party president K Chandrashekhar Rao 15 years ago.
As part of separate state agitation, Chandrashekhar Rao decided to start fast-unto-death at Siddipet on November 29, 2009. The BRS leader, who came to Karimnagar on November 26, had started to Siddipet on the morning of November 29. However, he was arrested at Alugunur chowk and taken to Khammam jail. When he stayed at his Teegalaguttapalli residence in Karimnagar for two days, police tried to arrest Chandrashekhar Rao but in vain.
Anticipating an arrest, BRS leaders and activists had formed a three-tier security layer around Chandrashekhar Rao’s residence by dividing themselves into three groups. While a few activists patrolled outside the surrounding wall, others were inside the wall. A few of them sat on the top of the wall. As their plan did not materialize at Telangana Bhavan, cops arrested the BRS leader at Alugunur crossroads and shifted him to Khammam jail, BRS activists recollected.
Some activists became emotional when a video of Chandrashekhar Rao’s arrest at Alugunur and his deeksha at NIMS hospital was played as part of the Deeksha Diwas celebrations held in Alugunur on Friday.
While participating in the programme, BRS working president KT Rama Rao also recollected how Chandrashekhar Rao was arrested at Alugunur chowk by stopping him and other leaders at NTR Chowk on the other side of Alugunur bridge.
Local MLA Gangula Kamalkar and party district president GV Ramakrishna Rao also recalled their memories.
