Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) celebrated International Women’s Day at Telangana Bhavan on Sunday, with party women leaders cutting a cake and felicitating women achievers from various fields. They credited the previous K Chandrashekhar Rao government for introducing welfare schemes and accused the present Congress regime of failing to fulfil promises made to women.

Speaking on the occasion, BRSLP deputy leader P Sabita Indra Reddy said women continue to face discrimination despite progress in many fields. She announced that the party would soon release a booklet on issues faced by women and possible solutions. She said schemes such as Kalyana Lakshmi, KCR Kits and Mission Bhagiratha had brought major changes in the lives of women and stated that many women wanted Chandrashekhar Rao to return as Chief Minister.

MLA V Sunitha Lakshma Reddy said the previous BRS government had given priority to women’s welfare and empowerment, while former Minister Satyavathi Rathod termed the BRS tenure a golden period for women empowerment.

MLC Surabhi Vani Devi recalled that her father and former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, as well as former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, worked for women’s empowerment. Former MLA Gongidi Sunitha stated that the Congress government had failed to implement its assurances to women.

Former Zilla Parishad chairperson Tula Uma, who presided over the programme, said BRS would hold wider discussions on women’s issues in the coming days. Cultural programmes were held and women achievers were felicitated on the occasion.
