Hyderabad: BRS spokesperson Manne Krishank on Monday strongly objected to the State government’s reported proposal to merge the Secunderabad Cantonment Board with the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation, alleging that the decision was announced without consulting residents or stakeholders.
He demanded that the government immediately withdraw the proposal, honour the aspirations of citizens, initiate a transparent public consultation process and proceed with the merger of Secunderabad Cantonment with GHMC in line with public demand.
In a statement, Krishank said over 1.31 lakh residents had earlier expressed support for merging the Secunderabad Cantonment area with GHMC through a signature campaign. Ignoring such a large public mandate was unfair and contrary to democratic principles, he said. He argued that residents of Secunderabad Cantonment had long been demanding integration with GHMC and not with the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation.
The BRS leader also stressed the historical and cultural significance of Secunderabad, popularly known as Lashkar, and said its unique identity as part of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad should be respected. He criticised the government for allegedly making a major policy announcement without prior consultation with citizens, local representatives or civil society groups, thereby abandoning democratic values.
