BRS slams Revanth Reddy’s silence on Almatti dam row, demands contempt plea against Karnataka
Former MP B Vinod Kumar criticised CM Revanth Reddy for not opposing Karnataka’s move to raise the Almatti dam height despite a Supreme Court stay. He demanded immediate legal action, warning of severe losses to Telangana. BRS leader Soma Bharat Kumar defended KCR’s efforts and accused Congress of betraying Telangana’s water rights.
Hyderabad: Former MP B Vinod Kumar lashed out at Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for remaining silent on Karnataka’s decision to increase the height of the Almatti project despite a Supreme Court stay. He demanded that the State government immediately file a contempt petition in the apex court.
“Karnataka has already cleared Rs 70,000 crore for acquisition of 1.33 lakh acres of land to increase Almatti dam height. If the height is raised, Telangana will face huge losses. Yet Revanth Reddy hasn’t uttered a word,” he said.
Addressing the media at Telangana Bhavan on Thursday, Vinod Kumar questioned whether Revanth Reddy’s silence was linked to the Congress government in Karnataka. He pointed out that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had already objected to Karnataka’s decision and vowed to stop it under any circumstances.
He recalled that the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal (KWDT) verdict of 2013 was stayed by the Supreme Court following protests in undivided Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana continued the legal battle after 2014.
“Revanth Reddy, who recently vowed not to forgo even a drop of Telangana’s share of water in the Krishna River, is now watching silently as Karnataka violates the stay,” he added.
BRS general secretary Soma Bharat Kumar countered Revanth Reddy’s charge that former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao did not secure Telangana’s rightful share in Krishna River waters.
“It was KCR who pushed for the Tribunal by writing 33 letters to the Centre. The Congress has betrayed Telangana on Krishna River water for generations,” he said.
He warned that Telangana’s rights would be irreparably damaged if the State government failed to act on a war footing.
