Hyderabad: The political temperature shot up several notches in Huzurabad on Tuesday with the Election Commission announcing that the by-election to the Assembly constituency will be held on October 30. The counting of votes will be taken up on November 2 and the results will be announced the same day.
As per the poll schedule, the gazette notification will be released on October 1, facilitating candidates to submit their nominations. The last date for nominations is October 8, scrutiny of nominations will be taken up on October 11 and the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is October 13. The Model Code of Conduct came into force in the constituency with immediate effect.
The bypoll was necessitated following the resignation of former Health Minister Eatala Rajender from TRS after he was removed from the Cabinet on charges of encroaching assigned lands of the poor. Rajender subsequently joined the BJP and will contest the bypoll on the saffron party ticket.
The ECI had kept the Huzurabad bypoll on hold early in September while releasing the schedule for bypolls to three Assembly seats in West Bengal and one in Odisha. After seeking the views of the State government, it had announced that the bypoll will be held after the festival season and also because of the Covid-19 pandemic and the heavy rains in the State. The EC, however, decided to hold the Huzurabad bypoll in October along with three Parliamentary and 30 Assembly constituencies across the country.
On the political front, the ruling TRS has stolen a march over the opposition parties not only in launching the poll campaign but also in announcing the candidature. The party fielded Gellu Srinivas Yadav, president of TRS Vidyarthi, the students’ wing of the TRS. Srinivas Yadav was actively involved in the Statehood movement. While Congress is yet to announce its candidate, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Left parties are also likely to field its candidates. The battle will essentially be between the TRS and BJP with the Congress yet to launch its campaign.
The ruling party’s campaign, which went into top gear long before the poll dates were announced, is being spearheaded by Finance Minister T Harish Rao. Harish Rao and district in-charge Ministers Gangula Kamalakar and Koppula Eashwar have been on the campaign trail for the past few weeks covering the length and breadth of the constituency. Rajender too has been visiting every village in the constituency, seeking the support of people from various walks of life.
