Cable snap halts gate operation at Jurala dam amid heavy inflows
A crest gate at the Priyadarshini Jurala Project failed to open due to a snapped cable, even as Krishna river inflows touched 53,000 cusecs. Authorities rushed technical teams and resumed pending repair work to address operational issues on priority.
Hyderabad: Amid rising flood levels in the Krishna river, the Priyadarshini Jurala Project reported operational issues with one of its 62 crest gates on Thursday.
Officials said crest gate no. 9 failed to open after one of its two rope cables snapped, raising concerns as inflows into the project rose steadily to 53,000 cusecs following heavy rains in the catchment area. A technical team was rushed to the site to rectify the issue.
The project’s radial gate maintenance programme, taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 11 crore, had earlier run into delays due to the contractor’s failure to complete the work on schedule.
Officials said critical problems with four to five gates were left unaddressed, but the contractor’s men and machinery have now resumed work. All issues related to dam operation are being attended to on a war footing, they added.
