Mulugu: CMO Secretary Smita Sabharwal on Tuesday instructed officials to complete pending works of the Sammakka barrage across the Godavari river at Tupakulagudem of Kannaigudem mandal in Mulugu district. She, along with officials of the Irrigation Department and the executing agency, inspected and reviewed the works.
Sabharwal said the barrage, regulator and railing works should be completed by the month end to store water. Responding to this, project Superintending Engineer (SE) Sudheer said the barrage works were almost complete and the remaining works would be completed on a war footing.
The Sammakka barrage was taken up under the PV Narasimha Rao Kanthanapally Sujala Sravanthi Scheme with a storage capacity of 6.94 tmc to stabilise the ayacut of 6.21 lakh under J Chokka Rao Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme and 7.50 lakh acres under the Sri Rama Sagar Project (SRSP) Stage-I & II. The provision for the generation of 240 MW hydropower was also proposed.
The Tupakulagudem barrage is located 23 km downstream of the Ichampally project site on the Godavari. As part of re-engineering, the location of the Kanthanapally barrage has been shifted 17 km upstream at Tupakulagudem.
The estimated cost of the project is Rs 1,624 crore.
