Kothagudem: The Central government lacked sincerity in the implementation of ‘Beti Bachao- Beti Padhao’ scheme, alleged the Student Federation of India (SFI) district committee leaders. The SFI activists staged a dharna at Government Junior College here on Tuesday against the alleged misuse of the scheme’s funds by huge expenditure on advertising. They wanted a probe into the matter. The student body district secretary Burra Veerabhadram said the Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women in its report tabled in Lok Sabha recently found that during the 2016-2019 about 78.91 per cent of the scheme’s funds were spent on advertising alone.

He flayed the Centre’s approach towards the implementation of the scheme. The findings of the report indicate the Central government’s lack of sincerity towards the girl’s welfare and its failure to monitor the funds’ expenditure, he said. It was said that the government used the public money only for its media campaigns and advertisements instead of spending the funds on the education and welfare of girls. No steps were taken by the government on improving the gender ratio in the country.

The sex ratio of girls to every thousand boys has dropped from 976 in 1961, 927 in 2001 and 918 in 2011, but the government has not taken any action, Veerabhadram complained. SFI district vice president Bayya Abhimanyu, college student leader Satya and others were present.
