Suryapet: All India Agriculture Workers Unions (AIAWU) national council member Mulakapalli Ramulu on Sunday said they would launch an intensified agitation if the Centre tried to dilute the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP).

Speaking at a seminar on “NREGP in union Budget” here, he said the Centre has plans to dilute NREGP, which was achieved through years-long agitations across the country. “It has been deliberately reducing funds for NREGP in the union budget for the last four years,” he added.

Funds allocation to NREGP was cut down to Rs 73,000 crore in union budget for 2022-23 from Rs 98,000 crore in 2020-21, he said, adding that Rs 21,000 crores from last year’s budgetary allocation was not sanctioned for the works by the Centre. He urged the Centre to allocate required Rs 2.64 crores in the budget to provide job-days to NREGP workers as per the act.

He urged the government to launch a Urban Employment Scheme to provide employment to poor people in towns and cities. He opined that union budget was prepared keeping in mind the interests of the corporate sector. “Tax on the rich has been reduced while the middle class is being taxed more,” he said, adding that education, employment and welfare sectors were given a raw deal.

He also urged the government to withdraw the circular No.17022(3), which was issued to reduce the summer allowances to the labor. Hunger, poverty, unemployment, socio-economic inequalities have increased in the country during Narendra Modi government.
