Khammam: Various charity activities were organised across the erstwhile Khammam in memory of Shyamala Gopalan, mother of US vice-president Kamala Harris who was a pioneering civil rights activist and scientist in the US.
A young entrepreneur of Telangana, N Suresh Reddy, established an NGO ‘Shyamala Gopalan Educational Society’ and the programmes were conducted under the aeges of the society on Tuesday marking Gopalan’s 83rd birth anniversary.
“I am inspired by the life and work of Shyamala, who hailed from south India and went abroad to become an eminent breast cancer, nutrition and endocrinological researcher, besides being an inspiration to women across the world,” Suresh Reddy told Telangana Today.
The society was established to spread her life’s message and to carry out several social service activities in Telangana, he said. Activities like plantation programme, distribution of fruits to patients, school bags to students, clothes and blankets and ‘Annadanam’ at Annam Seva Foundation Orphanage Home took place in Khammam.
Similar programmes along with a massive bike rally at Yellandu and a yoga programme at Manugur and the donation of water purifiers to an orphanage and bicycles to students at Paloncha in Kothagudem district took place, informed the NGO coordinators, TV Raju and Ramakrishna.
School bags and sweaters were distributed along with Annadanam at Mothukuri in Bhongir district and in Hyderabad while plantation programme, cultural activities and cake cutting by students of Sri Vidyapeeth took place at Narketpally in Nalgonda district. Likewise, Annadanam was conducted at Sri Raja Rajeswari Temple, Vemulawada in Sircilla district on the day, they added.
