Hyderabad: Telangana chess player Arjun Erigaisi dethroned five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand to be top ranked player in the blitz, on Thursday.
The 18-year-old from Warangal now has 2765 rating points to be the top player in the country. He is also ranked No.13 in the world list which is led by Magnus Carlsen with 2892 points. Anand slid in the rankings after a string of poor results in the Vugar Gashimov Memorial chess tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan. He recorded only two victories to finish at the bottom in the blitz event.
The youngster said it is a good feeling to be the top in the country. “It’s a pleasant feeling. I would like to do well in the world rapid blitz,” said Arjun from Spain. Arjun recently finished runner-up at the blitz event at the TATA Steel Chess India tournament in Kolkata, where he also won the title in the rapid event.
