Hanamkonda: The demand to create Warangal district by uniting Warangal and Hanamkonda districts has gained momentum with the Telangana Udyamakarula Vedika and Forum for Better Warangal launching protests in support of the demand.
Leaders of Telangana Udyamakarula Vedika and Forum for Better Warangal recently staged a one-day Nirasana Deeksha at Ekasila Park, seeking the merger of Hanamkonda and Warangal districts and the development of Warangal as a major city on a par with Hyderabad. Warangal (West) MLA Naini Rajender Reddy took part in the deeksha, extending support to the demand. He said the matter was taken to the notice of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy by MLAs from the erstwhile Warangal district during a meeting with him sometime back.
The Chief Minister told the MLAs that he was aware of the demand. There were some issues like delimitation of Assembly constituencies that needed to be sorted out first, and a proper decision would soon be taken, the MLA said. Rajender Reddy, taking the demand of the vedika and the forum further, wanted Hanamkonda, Warangal, Jangaon, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mahabubabad and Mulugu districts to be reunited to form the undivided Warangal district as it was in the past. He hoped that one day the Chief Minister would merge Warangal and Hanamkonda districts.
Speaking to Telangana Today, vedika chairman Kurapati Venkata Narayana stated that they would continue their movement for the merger of Warangal-Hanamkonda-Kazipet areas, known as tri-cities for decades, to create Warangal district. Extending support to the demand, Telangana Jana Samithi state vice-president Ambati Srinivas also said that the historical city of Warangal was divided into Hanamkonda and Warangal districts, hindering the development of both.
Keeping the development of both districts in mind, Hanamkonda and Warangal districts should be merged to form a single Warangal district, he noted. KUDA chairman Enagala Venkataram Reddy and former Mayor T Rajeswara Rao also echoed the same sentiments.
