Hyderabad: Chief Justice of India Justice NV Ramana highlighted the need and demand of lawyers at the grassroots level and advised the law students to start their practice in district courts rather than the High Courts and the Supreme Court.
Addressing the graduating students during the 18th annual convocation of NALSAR University of Law here on Sunday, Justice Ramana narrated as to how his journey started as a lawyer with an appearance before a Tehsildar in a tenancy matter.
He shared his observation that graduating students were accustomed to considering legal problems in a theoretical manner only.
“There is an urgent need to introduce courses which are more practical and allow students to interact with people and their issues at the grassroots level. That brings me to one of the disappointing outcomes I have found in present day legal education. I find that very few students who graduate from the National Law Schools are interested in joining litigation or taking up public causes, let alone practice at the district level,” he said.
Stating that he was alarmed at the reports of increased number of youth falling prey to intoxicants, Justice Ramana urged the youth to disassociate themselves from the substance abuse. “Your mental and physical health is in your hands. A vibrant nation is built upon the health and energy of its youth,” he said.
The Chief Justice of India praised the State government for extending all the support towards the university. He also inaugurated three new buildings on the NALSAR campus — new girls hostel block, boys hostel block and the dining hall.
NALSAR University of Law Vice Chancellor, Dr. Faizan Mustafa listed out the various awards and recognitions won by the students of the university.
Considering the financial hardships faced by the parents during Covid-19 pandemic, he said the university extended financial assistance to students of regular programmes and opened distance learning programmes by providing fee concessions of over Rs 5 crore. A total of 1,204 graduates were awarded various degrees and diplomas during the convocation.
Telangana High Court Chief Justice and Chancellor of the University, Justice Satish Chandra Sharma awarded degrees to 194 students who were present to collect their certificates in person. A total of 104 gold medals were presented to meritorious students from 2020 and 2021 academic batches.
A Indrakaran Reddy, Minister for Forests & Environment and S&T, Endowments and Law, and several serving and retired judges also attended the ceremony.
