Coal Mine accident: Three rescued, search for three others continues

Peddapalli: Three coal miners trapped underneath loose coal after the coal mine roof collapsed were extricated alive on Tuesday by rescue teams which struggled for over 24 hours after the coal mine roof collapse in Adriyala Longwall project in RG-III area of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited in Ramagiri. Rescuers were literally inching their way in the underground mine on the rescue mission, one of the biggest to be launched in the recent times.
Three more persons including two officers were still stuck beneath the coal sheet as hopes began to diminish about their survival. The rescue teams, nevertheless, were continuing their efforts with renewed vigour after pulling out two miners alive. In all there were seven persons including two officers and five workers were working in the mine, when the roof collapsed on Monday morning. While one of them, Meesala Veeraiah, was the luckiest person, as he was working a little away from the accident site. The air blast consequent to the roof collapse literally flung away and he survived with negligible injuries.
Six more were trapped in the coal debri, but rescue teams managed to pull out Operator Jadi Venkatesh and Mining Sardar Pilli Naresh in the night. Lager, the teams managed to pull out another worker Ravinder who had earlier responded to the calls of the rescue team. The teams drilled holes into the debris and began pumping oxygen with the hope of keeping the buried persons do not meet their end for lack of oxygen. Ravinder was rushed to Godavarikhani Singareni Area hospital from where he has been referred to a private hospital in Hyderabad for better treatment.
Rescue staff are continuing efforts to locate safety officer S Jayaraj, deputy manager Tejawath Chaitanya Teja and contract worker Thota Srikanth.
Manthani MLA D Sridhar Babu, Zilla Parishad Chairman Putta Madhukar and leaders of various trade unions visited the coal mine and enquired with Singareni officials about the incident. Meanwhile, Ramagundam MLA Korukanti Chander consoled the injured miners in Godavarikhani Singareni Area hospital.
