Hyderabad: The usual hustle-bustle at Singareni coal mine areas in the State was missing on Thursday with as many as 42,000 employees going on a 72-hour strike demanding that the Central government withdraw its move of auctioning four coal blocks in Singareni.
The strike affected the daily production of more than two lakh tonnes of coal from 25 coal mines and 19 open cast mines in Singareni areas. Except for employees attending to essential services, all the employees went on strike.
After Telangana Boggu Gani Karmika Sangam (TBGKS) issued a strike notice demanding thar their demands be fulfilled apart from requesting the Central government to withdraw four coal blocks in Singareni from the auction, the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) held talks with the leaders of various unions last week to avert the strike. But the talks were inconclusive manner prompting the employees to go ahead with the strike.
During the talk, the SCCL management explained in detail to the unions about the allocation of coal blocks from independence till now along with the changes that came in the field. It also informed the unions about the efforts made by it to prevent the Centre from auctioning the blocks.
However, the employees did not relent. Later in the evening on Thursday, the unions’ leaders took part in a meeting convened by Regional Labour Commissioner to request the employees to withdraw the strike call.
