Peddapalli: The 72-hour strike called by trade unions in Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) was total on the first day on Thursday. Except essential services workers, all others participated in the strike.

As part of the strike, activists of various trade unions staged protest demonstration at mines and raised slogans against the Union government’s decision to privatise coal blocks. Besides taking out bike rallies, effigies of the Centre were also burnt at coal mines.

All unions including national trade unions decided to observe strike across Singareni from Thursday in protest against the Centre’s decision to privatise four coal blocks.

On the other hand, a banned trade union, Singareni Karmika Samakya (SIKASA), affiliated to CPI Maoist party, has also extended its support to the strike. In this regard, Prabath, its representative, issued a statement on Thursday.

In all, 19,000 workers working in six underground and four opencast mines in Ramagundam region stayed away from their duties.

Trade union leaders including Seeta Ramaiah (AITUC), Yadagiri Sattaiah (BMS), Raji Reddy (CITU), Riaz Ahmed (HMS), Narsimha Reddy (INTUC) and others participated in protest demonstrations.
