Karimnagar: Collector RV Karnan advised farmers to cultivate irrigated dry (ID) crops to get more benefits instead of paddy in Yasangi season. In this regard, agriculture officials should educate farmers, he said.
The Collector examined groundnut and other ID crops sowed by farmers in Gundlapalli of Ganneruvaram mandal and Sultanpur of Thimmapur mandal on Sunday.
Interacting with farmers, he informed that the State government is not going to establish paddy procurement centers since FCI has decided not to purchase paddy in the Yasangi season. Farmers who entered agreement with rice millers and seed companies could cultivate paddy. Other farmers have to sell paddy on their own if they cultivate paddy, he made it clear.
Instead of paddy, farmers should go for alternate crops such as black gram, maize, sesames and other profitable ID crops. Besides supplying adequate seed, all kinds of assistance would also be provided to farmers by the government.
When farmers complained about the shortfall of labourers to pluck groundnut crop, Collector assured to make available labourers to farmers by stopping NREGS works during the time of plucking.
Farmers would get more benefits if they sow paddy in Vanakalam and ID crops in Yasangi season. Moreover, soil would become more fertile through the crop diversion method, he opined.
In the evening, the Collector conducted a review meeting with agriculture officials to discuss sowing of alternate crops in the Yasangi season. Karnan instructed officials to educate farmers about sowing ID crops instead of paddy in the Yasangi season.
District Agriculture Officer V Sreedhar, Deputy Director, Horticulture, Srinivas, Project Director, ATMA, Priyadarshini, scientists of Krushi Vignana Kendram, Jammikunta and others participated in the meeting.
