Sangareddy: Former Minister T Harish Rao said peace and communal harmony in Telangana had been disturbed after the Congress came to power, stating that the State had witnessed over 60 communal riots in the last two years.

Addressing multiple municipal election campaign meetings at Indresham, Isnapur, Sadasivapet, Kohir, Zaheerabad and Sangareddy on Sunday, Rao lashed out at the Congress government, accusing it of ignoring the welfare of minorities.

The previous BRS government had established several residential institutions in Zaheerabad and also extended honorarium to Imams. Nearly 50 students from minority residential colleges had cracked the NEET examination, realising their dream of becoming doctors.

However, once the Congress came to power, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy stopped the distribution of Ramzan gifts to poor Muslims, a scheme introduced by the BRS government. The Congress was now blackmailing voters as well, Rao said, adding that Congress leaders were threatening to blacklist houses with new constructions and delay bill payments.

Revanth Reddy had warned of blocking the release of funds to municipalities where opposition parties won. However, receiving funds from the Centre was the right of every civic body and no one could stop it, he said, assuring civic bodies that funds from the Centre would be secured without any hurdles wherever the BRS emerged victorious.

Rao accused the Congress government of completely ignoring the development of towns in the State over the last two years. He said towns were infested with mosquitoes as the authorities had failed to even carry out fogging operations.

Calling upon voters to support the BRS in the municipal elections, Rao said the polls would be the first step towards making K Chandrashekhar Rao the Chief Minister again.
