Hyderabad: The Telangana Assembly saw a heated exchange over the State’s rising debt. BJP floor leader A Maheshwar Reddy accused the Congress government of reckless borrowing, while Congress MLAs countered by blaming the BJP-led Centre for neglecting Telangana.

Participating in the discussion on the State Budget on Friday, Maheshwar Reddy claimed the State was borrowing Rs 1,700 crore daily, pushing its total debt to Rs.8.6 lakh crore. He criticised the Revanth Reddy government for borrowing around Rs 1 crore per minute, warning that the per capita debt burden now stood at Rs 2.27 lakh. He slammed the borrowing spree, despite the Centre increasing tax devolution to States from 32 per cent under UPA to 42 per cent.

Countering him, Congress members including Ministers D Sridhar Babu, Ponnam Prabhakar, Jupally Krishna Rao and MLA Ch Vijaya Ramana Rao accused the BJP of failing to allocate new projects or funds for Telangana, despite having eight MPs, including two union Ministers. Maheshwar Reddy dismissed the claims, alleging Congress was diverting attention from its own failures.
