Suryapet: Congress councilors created a ruckus during the meeting of Suryapet Municipal council on Tuesday when they also staged a protest at the podium of the municipal Chairperson.
Immediately after the council meeting commenced, slogan-shouting Congress councilors barged to the podium. They alleged that the municipal chairperson was showing discrimination towards their wards and not taking up developmental works. There was a need to give equal priority in releasing funds to the wards represented by opposition councilors on par with ruling party councilors’ wards, they said.
In a novel protest, 12th ward councilor (Congress) B Srinivas slapped himself on his face with a slipper which shocked all the councilors and officials. At one stage, a heated argument took place between TRS and Congress councilors.
The Congress councilors did not relent even after Municipal Chairperson Perumalla Annapurna clarified that no discrimination was shown in allocation of funds for developmental works in the wards of opposition party councilors.
Nalgonda MP N Uttam Kumar Reddy, who attended the municipal council meeting, said District Collectors have special powers to allocate municipal funds for works under Section 26 of Municipal Administration Act during calamities. “But, misusing the powers, the District Collector of Suryapet has been allocating municipal funds for walking tracks,” he said, and questioned whether laying of walking tracks would come under works to be taken up during calamities.
He said that contractors who take up developmental works in wards should work under the supervision of the ward councilor. Names of all councilors should be included in the plaques placed at the time of laying of foundation stone for developmental works in the town, he said.
