Hyderabad: Former Minister and BRS senior leader V Srinivas Goud lashed out at the Congress government in Telangana for its gross negligence towards farmers reeling under crop loss due to water crisis first and later due to unseasonal rains during the harvest. He demanded an immediate compensation of Rs.30,000 per acre for farmers affected by water scarcity and hailstorms.
“As promised in the Congress manifesto, tenant farmers also must be compensated. This government neglected irrigation water supply during the ongoing Yasangi (Rabi) crop. Farmers who succeeded in cultivating crops despite all odds, are now suffering due to delay in paddy procurement coupled with unseasonal rains,” he said.
Speaking to mediapersons at Telangana Bhavan on Tuesday, Srinivas Goud lambasted the State government for failing to implement a crop insurance scheme. “Without repairs taken up for Kaleshwaram project, Godavari River water was not supplied to water bodies for cultivation. Similarly, operation of Devadula project pumps was delayed by about a month. Projects in Palamuru, Nettampadu, and Jurala received no water. Crops withered out. Farmers are on the streets, staging dharnas,” he said.
The former Minister charged the Congress with prioritising political vendetta over governance. “Ministers are too busy with internal politics and settle scores with opponents, to even visit farmers. Electricity and water were not provided. If the government is unaware, we are ready to show them the damage.”
He also criticised the failure to include provisions on assigned lands and unclaimed land sales in the Bhu Bharati initiative. “Congress made promises in the Farmer’s Declaration. If they’re not fulfilled, we will protest along with farmers,” he warned.
