Construction sector posing eco challenges: IIT-M faculty

Warangal Urban: Stating that the construction industry in India was one of the largest economic activities, Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, G Appa Rao said the sector was also posing many challenges with regard to protection of environment. He stressed on the need to use sustainable material in the construction of structures.
The Department of Civil Engineering (CE), Kakatiya Institute of Technology and Science, Warangal, (KITSW) is organising an All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, sponsored Short Term Training Programme (STTP) on “Sustainable Materials and Resilient Structures-Philosophy, Design, Implementation and Performance” on the campus.
Prof G Appa Rao and KITS Principal Prof K Ashoka Reddy jointly inaugurated the six-day STTP-I via virtual conference in the presence of STTP coordinator and HoD of CE, Dr M Veera Reddy, STTP co-coordinators Dr Narala Gangadhara Reddy, an Assistant Professor, and P Teja Abhilash, an Assistant Professor, and other faculty members of the institute on Monday.
Delivering the lecture online, Prof Appa Rao said that the STTP focuses on the use of sustainable materials in construction of structures, identification of materials which are sustainable in nature, measuring its performance and method of implementation for the benefit of engineering faculty, research scholars and students. He also mentioned the sustainable use of industrial wastes in civil engineering applications, performance evaluation techniques for sustainable infrastructures and innovative technologies in Rapid Mass Transport System.
KITS Principal Prof K Ashoka Reddy said that the main objective of the STTP is to provide awareness on sustainable construction to all the stakeholders, to implement the principle involved in adopting the sustainable practices, to analyze and evaluate sustainable performance of civil Infrastructure and understand the concept of life cycle assessment in building assessment. The participants make use this technical platform to share and update your eco-friendly sustainable technical knowledge.
STTP coordinator Dr M Veera Reddy said that 170 faculty members and researchers from across the country are attending the STTP. Rajya Sabha MP, KITSW secretary & correspondent, Capt V Lakshmikantha Rao congratulated and appreciated the civil engineering department for conducting the STTP.
