Hyderabad: The steady drop in daily Covid-19 infections and the waning intensity of the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 are clear indications that the pandemic is slowing down and normalcy in all walks of life can be restored across Telangana in the next three to four months.
Distinguished senior scientists in Hyderabad believe that the present scenario of the pandemic is good, as daily Covid-19 infections are dropping steadily in Telangana. Even in States like Maharashtra, Kerala and West Bengal, which are reporting a higher number of Covid infections, the numbers are relatively less.
“These are clear indications that the pandemic is slowing down and normalcy in all walks of life could be restored in the coming three to four months. As the intensity of the Delta variant reduces, the pandemic is very likely to reach a non-threatening endemic stage like any other diseases, not only in Telangana but across the country,” says Chairman, Scientific Advisory Committee, Telangana Academy of Sciences, and former Director, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Dr Ch Mohan Rao.
The next few months could turn out to be decisive. “The next three months are definitely going to be critical. The Covid vaccination is under way at a good pace, a considerable section, especially in urban cities like Hyderabad, has acquired natural immunity. All these are good indications and if people take a little bit of precautions, we should be through with this pandemic,” feels former Director, CCMB, and biolgist Dr RK Mishra.
The steady improvement in Covid-19 therapeutics including the possible availability of anti-viral medications in the near future, apart from ongoing vaccination and significant drop in the incidence of daily infections are encouraging signs, Dr Mohan Rao pointed out.
“Even if there is a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, taking precautions, getting vaccinated in large numbers and taking vaccine booster doses in case they are available should help us control any new surge,” Dr Mohan Rao said.
The senior scientists have also urged people to get administered with Covid vaccine at the earliest. “Covid vaccines definitely provide protection from the SARS-CoV-2. While there are instances of waning immunity, the fact also remains that neutralising antibodies are not the only source of immunity in our body. There are other sources like T-cells that produce antibodies and usually are not measured. At least for the next three months, we should focus on vaccinating as many individuals as possible,” Dr Mishra added.
