Hyderabad: Doctors at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Secunderabad have successfully provided treatment for cancer and Covid-19 to a 24-year-old-male patient. The young patient, hailing from Mancherial, was suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a cancer of bone marrow and blood, and underwent a bone marrow transplant (BMT), after recovering from Covid-19.
The patient Rajkumar Kocharla was diagnosed with cancer and as part of treatment was undergoing chemotherapy when he tested positive for Covid-19. Due to cancer, the youngster had weak immunity and was on ventilator support to recover from Covid-19.
“Many thought that the patient may not survive from Covid severity because of his weak immunity and ventilator support. However, we conducted a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) after he recovered from Covid-19. He surprised everybody to survive such harsh conditions,” said KIMS, medical oncologist, haematologist, and stem cell/bone marrow transplant specialist, Dr Narendar Kumar
He said that BMT is a proper treatment for leukemia and the patient’s uncle’s bone marrow matched by 50 per cent. So, BMT was taken-up successfully in February of this year and after four-months of observation, Rajkumar is fully recovered and is in sound health now.
