20 crocodile hatchlings, 60 eggs found on outskirts of Melgiri Pet, Sangareddy district on Monday
Sangareddy: The villagers of Melagiri Pet were left in shock after they found around 20 crocodile hatchlings and 60 eggs on the outskirts of the village on Monday.
Farmers passing through the area found the hatchlings in an agricultural field and alerted forest officials. The forest staff, who rushed to the spot, rescued the hatchlings and collected the eggs. They were shifted to the crocodile breeding centre at Manjeera Dam.
After a preliminary examination, forest officials observed that two crocodiles had built nests close to each other at the site. However, they could not spot the adult crocodiles despite spending more than two hours in the area.
The villagers urged forest officials to rescue the adult crocodiles as well, fearing attacks by them. Since the Melagiri Pet Project, a minor irrigation project, is located close to the site, officials suspected that the crocodiles might have come out of the water body for nesting.
